Passage 2 Making prints

There were two popular techniques to make prints in the 1600s. They were engraving and etching. Engraving was an older method. It involved cutting lines on to a copper plate with a tool called a burin. It was a steel rod with a sharp end. Little shivers of metal would rise from the plate and have to be carefully removed. Then, the plate would be inked and paper set down on top to make the print. The resulting print had neat lines. Etching was different. First, the copper plate was coated with resin or wax. Then, the artist scratched the picture into the resin with a needle. This exposed the copper only in the scratches. Finally, the plate was given an acid bath, which ate at the metal, causing a more irregular line. The plate would then be inked for the print.
